The American Revolution

The war that started it all was the American Revolution. When the American colonies could not take the unjust taxing practices of Great Britain any longer. Britain was need money after practicing Salutary Neglect for so long started to raise taxes on the American Colonies. The colonies found it wrong say that taxation without representation is against their rights. So they decide to get their own independence and went to war against the great big Britain. With the aid of France the colonies band together to defeat Great Britain and gain their independence.

Welcome to Hospital 58 where we looked at the medical history of Uncle Sam. We saw how he has grown through the times and how he has change. We have looked at some the health problem that Uncle Sam had to face from Civil war to World Wars. From race relations to international relations we have learned a lot about Uncle Sam and now we are able to predict what will happen to Uncle Sam in the future.

World Wars

World Wars

There have only been two world wars, World War 1 and of course World War 2, and in but of the world wars America has played a great role in both of them. World War 1 was caused by four main things, Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, and Nationalism better known has M.A.I.N. In the early 1900’s Europe was in contain struggle over land and resources. That is the reason that European countries need a strong military, which lead to Militarism. It also became a common thing in Europe for nations to join focuses against another nation to gain resources, this lead to Europe being divided into the Central Powers and the Allies, which was one of the causes of World War 1. And since all the fighting was over resources this caused Imperialism. Which was basically European countries dividing up Africa, and fight over the resources in Africa. One thing that is important to know about Imperialism is that the mother county gains (which is the country that is controlling) from it while the child country (which is the country being controlled) lose. But no one likes being controlled many child country tried to gain their independence, which was Nationalism. And that is how World War 1 started. In 1914 there was a little dispute between Austria-Hungary one of the Central power and the little nation of Serbia. Bosnia a province in the Austria-Hungary Empire wanted to gain its independence and join Serbia its true nation. Serbia aided their efforts, which caused a conflict with Austria-Hungary. But it was not a huge problem until June 28, 1914 when Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated on a visit to Sarajevo the Capital of Bosnia. Austria-Hungary felt that Serbia was involved with it and declared war on them. This caused a chin of event that thrown all of Europe into war.

But America was still neutral in all if European affairs. America only aided the Allied countries by sending money and resource to them. This act is what eventually gets America into World War 1. When the Germans and their U-Boats began sinking suspected ships from the U.S that were aiding the Allies they destroyed them. The most famous ship being the Lusitania, which was a British passenger liner carrying weapon and aid. The Germans and its U-Boat destroyed it killing everyone on board including the 128 American passengers. After more sinking of American ship (City of Memphis, Illinois, and Vigilancia) the U.S could not take it anymore so on April 6 1917 President Woodrow Wilson reluctantly led the nation into war.

America’s involvement in World War 2 was also similar. World War 2 you could say was bound to happen. They way World War 1 ended with the Treaty of Versailles and Wilson’s Fourteen Points program not working Germany was blamed for World War 1 and was punished like so. Germany became financially broke and in a depression. Until and young man named Adolf Hitler showed them hope. Hitler was enraged that Germany was defeated and by the degrading terms of the Treaty of Versailles had. He quickly rose in Germany’s political sense with his Nazi party. In November 1923 Hitler and his party seized power of Germany. He then started to grow Germany’s Empire clearly breaking the Treaty of Versailles that causing World War 2. With Japan and Italy joining Germany they where known has the Axis power, while the Soviet Union and Great Britain where the Allied Forces. America did not join the war until December 7, 1941 when the Japanese attacked a U.S naval base in Hawaii known as Pearl Harbor. This act quickly threw America into the war. For most of the time the war was at a stand still. Only the pacific front was a difficulty. The war in Europe ended with the Victory at Normandy and in Japan with the dropping of the Atomic Bomb in Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The Constitution

The constitution has governed our land for more than 200 years and proved to be almost perfect in a sense. The constitution protects our system and foresaw any future quarrels that there might be. Necessary precautions were made so power was equally distributed.By balancing power all the branches of the government have equal power. The system of checks and balances, also known as the separation of powers guarantees that no part of the government becomes too powerful. The French political philosopher Montesquieu was one of the first to create the idea. The constitution is flexible because it allows congress to create laws that are necessary and proper for the people, which is called the elastic clause. The Bill of Rights limits the powers of the federal government of the United States, protecting the rights of all citizens, residents and visitors on United States territory. The men that helped put this historic document together were O John Dickinson, Governor Morris, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Thomas Paine, Edmund Randolph, James Madison, Roger Sherman, James Wilson, and George Wythe.

Gilded Age

The Gilded Age is the era where industry prospered and began to substantially grow. The captains of industry provided many jobs and their companies which help stimulate the economy at the time. The businessmen of the Gilded Age created industrial towns and cities in the Northeast with new factories and contributed to the creation of ethnically diverse industrial working classes which produced the wealth owned by rising super-rich industrialists and financiers. Some captains of industry during the Gilded Age are still famous recognized name today. Including Samuel Gompers, John D. Rockefeller, and Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt and J.P. Morgan. The captains of industry were heavily judged and criticized at their time and soon became known as "robber barons". The term derived from their misuse of power and the manipulation of unethical finances.

The Civil War

Civil War
During the Civil War, the southern states attempted to secede from the Union although they had the right to. Eleven southern states declared their secession from the U.S. and formed the Confederate States of America, they were known as the Confederates during the time of the war. Both the outgoing and incoming U.S. presidential administrations opposed secession of the southern states, considering it rebellion. The northern and southern states caused total destruction during the war and lost about 700,000 lives.
Post Civil War
The Reconstruction period had a couple of successful parts after the Civil War. The 13th amendment abolished slavery and officially became illegal in 1808. The 14th amendment protects the citizens in the states, so the rights of African-Americans were clear and legislation could not ignore their rights. The 15th amendment stretched out the right to vote to all citizens and could not discriminate by race or color. During Reconstruction the Union troops stayed there to keep everything in order and to reassure that blacks weren’t being oppressed. Reconstruction was also an incomplete, mission because once the Union left the south and Afro-Americans began to fear again with the dangers that awaited them. The KKK were of afraid of Union troops but once they headed out, things became grim. The Jim Crowe Laws were created and taken in effect.
